Analysis of existing magazines COVERS 2

The typography on this cover is mainly sans serif fonts, this is effective as it is contemporary and modern. I think this is to show that the magazine is to focus on new upcoming music, not old fashioned music that would be presented with a serif font. The article clearly is about Paul Weller and Miles Kane, as they were once part of their own bands (the jam and the last shadow puppets) the picture highlights their solo careers.  The straight on angle is effective because we see the artist as we would see them perform. Additionally, they are looking directly into the camera which is effective as us as an audience feel like we know them, so is comfortable reading the magazine.
The layout of the magazine is effective as it’s quite different from the others. This is effective because the front cover is the first thing that people see of a magazine and if one stands out then they are encouraged to buy it. The photos on the left are effective as they look like a photo booth. The photos are humorous with funny facial expressions. This is effective because it is juxtaposed by the main photo on the magazine showing that the magazine has a lot of different features and they are not all the same.
Furthermore there is a quote which is anchors the main image, its personal which makes the reader want to read that article. Additionally, the strap line ‘Paul Weller & Miles Kane’ gives an overview of what the magazine is focusing on this week, this is effective as the audience will be encouraged to buy the magazine if they are fans. Furthermore, this is effective if people don’t know the artists by face, but have heard their name this gives them a chance to recognise the magazine and to buy it. Which expands the audience, and more people buy the magazine rather than the fans that know Paul and Miles by face.
There is an informal mode off address and uses a lot of exclamation marks. This is effective as it addresses the younger audience. The excessive use of note language and exclamation marks could represent the audience’s use of social media, or texting which makes it more personal and relatable to them.
The house style is effective as it shows the formality of the magazine. The use of the colour gold is effective as it portrays the covers stars almost as royalty. This is effective as it makes the audience feel honoured to read the magazine and are encouraged to buy it if it looks different than the others. The mise-en-scene of the photo is unusual, as they are dressed formally in suit and tie. This is effective as it shows that they are unlike any artist, which actually sells them as musicians but also makes the magazine stand out on the shelf as they are forward thinking and different. It appeals to northern soul fans as they feel like they are equal to the two musicians on the front cover.
