The
layout of this contents page is very effective as the photos are placed in the
middle, not only does this differ from other magazines but it also allows the
photo to be the first thing that reader sees and is interested in as soon as
they turn the page. The layout doesn’t follow conventions of other magazines as
it is very busy and used other ideas as well as traditional contents page
features. It has no white space which is effective as it represents that the
magazine is packed full of information, pictures and articles that will appeal
to their audience.
The mode of address for this particular page, like any
contents page, is fairly persuasive and exciting. For example the ‘UK’s No1 gig
guide’ this directly addresses the audience as they are people who want to go
to gigs and spend their money on tickets and merchandise. Additionally, the
arrow head encourages the reader to carry on reading to be informed on the
gigs. The list of pages on the right side use banners as which makes the
purpose of the features to stand out, additionally after this they use a
smaller font to introduce that article. They tend to use the name of the band
or artist, (eg. Pete Doherty) this is effective as the audience will be
attracted to the headlines that include their favourite artist, furthermore
they use an even smaller font to anchor the headline. This is an effective use
of typography as it doesn’t over power or over complicate the page with too
much information, yet gives enough to understand what the article is about.
Unlike any
other magazine they have included a band index, which is very effective, as it
successfully navigates their audience to where they want to read in the
magazine. This has almost becomes NMEs convention, as they are the only
magazine to do this. This is effective as it shows that they are different and
that they have a lot more to offer than other magazines do.
They have also added an advertisement to subscribe to their
magazine, they have used a black banner behind the text which allows I to stand
out this is effective because they are selling their own magazine. The use of
yellow texts allow it to be individual on the page therefore is bright and very
noticeable.
I also found it unusual that the contents page had a lead to
an article centre of the page. This follows all of the conventions of a normal
article, with drop capitals. This is effective as the reader sees how the
magazine is written from just the first page which encourages them to carry on.
The image above it shows different musicians. The effect of them playing
different guitars is good as it appeals to all guitarists whether it is bass
players or lead guitarists. it is a low angle shot which allows them to have
authority and portrays them as having power in the music industry.
