Analysis of Existing Magazines DOUBLE PAGE 1

The masthead title for this article is very effective. The sans serif font shows a forward thinking band yet the shadow effect of juxtaposing colours of yellow and blue really stand out. Furthermore, the kerning is fairly wide making each letter stand out individually It makes the band appear to be retro and old school, yet modern and forward thinking. This appeals to the target audience of younger people as they tend to like the older northern soul music but are delighted to hear new artists. The lead paragraph is effective as it also includes the by-lines and tells us who wrote the article. The serif font looks traditional and typed, yet the bright pink colour allows it to stand out against the other grey text on the page. It is jokey and uses the pun ‘like Liam’s forehead is touching yours’ implying that the bands second album is very personal. This is effective as it encourages the reader to read more as they have made a joke, and it puts the reader at ease. Additionally the lead is effective promoting the bands second album.
The photo is a close up medium shot of Liam Gallagher. They have chosen this as it is the most famous, and the front man of beady eye which is effective because the audience will know who he is and will be interested in what he says. I also think they have chosen him alone as most people know him from the band oasis with his other brother Noel Gallagher. So this picture highlights that he is no longer part of that bad that he is taking on his new band as an individual musician. The mise-en-scene of the picture is effective as his polo T-shirt is very traditional mod fashion, the old-style two striped polo almost screams Fred Perry. This is effective because the readers that look up to Liam can also buy his clothes as they are high street and affordable. Additionally, Liam is rocking the obvious northern soul haircut. The contemporary mods that read the magazine will appreciate this and feel like they can relate to Liam as he is dressed like a normal guy.
The body copy of my magazine is presented to industry standard. The borders around the text are minimal so the information fills the page. The gutters are narrow which is effective as it avoids white space. White space makes the page look sparse and unprofessional, so the narrow gutters make the page look full and informative this is effective because the way its set out is not like reading a book, and the columns make it easier to read which makes the reader want to carry on. The cross head is bright yellow which is effective because it adds to the house style of this page yet it stands out against the text. It’s a humorous quote from Liam Gallagher himself, which is effective as it make the mode of address very personal to Liam which appeals to all of his fans reading. Additionally, the shape of the cross head is slanted edges not a typical square. This is effective because it rebels against conventions, which portrays Liam’s character as a rock star. Furthermore the drop capital is unlike any other, it’s a blue circle with a letter T placed in the middle, this is effective because it’s unlike any other, showing that the article is exciting and forward thinking and has something different than the other magazines in the genre.
