Analysis of Existing Magazines DOUBLE PAGE 2

The masthead for this page is very simple, it’s simplistic sans serif font literally stating Johnny’s name is effective as it straight away tells the audience who the article is about. It’s not in its typical top 5th on the page, in fact is it a lot lower down, this is effective as it’s unconventional in music magazines which portrays this magazine as forward thinking, and shows it’s different than the others. There are by lines and picture credits under the masthead which are in a smaller font. The image to the left is a long shot in black and white. The colours of the image are effective as it portrays the artist that Johnny Marr is. He was originally in a band called The Smiths in the 80’s and now is writing his own music. The picture is a long shot and we see Marr in northern soul clothes with his guitar. The empty space in the image could present that he once was in a band now is left alone above the city, this is effective because he is shown as influential and powerful. This is effective as we get an idea of who he is before we read the article. The photo is rebellious as he is playing his guitar outside. The audience of this magazine are not people who like to be like everyone else and prefer to rebel against conventions and traditions, so this picture solely appeals to them and encourages them to read on. His facial expression and eye contact with the camera make us connect with him and therefore feel like we are talking to him when reading this article. The drop capital ‘Q’ is very effective; it’s on a red square background which stands out as it’s the only colour on the page. The ‘Q’ itself is effective as it implies that the article is an interview with questions and answers from the artist. This is effective as the audience know what to expect from the article. An interview is effective as it’s personal and you straight up get what the artist is thinking. It makes the magazines mode of address colloquial and easier for the audience to read and relate too.
The lead paragraph follows conventions when introducing the article; it is in a bold, larger font and also is in red. This is effective as it’s the first thing that people read, and when they enjoy the introductory paragraph they want to carry on reading the article. They start the interview with a question that no one would expect, and ask about the hairstyles and look of rock and roll/northern soul rather than the music or song writing. This will surprise the audience and makes them laugh as this is not what you would expect from a music magazine, which encourages them to carry on. Furthermore this is effective as the mode of address and lack of formality in the magazine differs from any other, and makes the reader relaxed when reading the magazine. Additionally, the body copy is conventional and is produced as a printed presentation to accepted industry standards, this shows formality of the magazine.
