I believe there is not a magazine existing for the fans of Northern Soul. A large proportion of northern soul's first audience came from within the 1960s mod sub culture. In the late 1960s, when some mods started to embrace freakbeat and psychedelic rock, other mods, especially those in northern England, stuck to the original mod soundtrack of soul and Blues, eventually two new groups found themselves: the skinheads and the northern soul scene.
I want my magazine to be new and for a younger audience, I have chosen to focus my magazine on the genre of Contemporary Northern Soul. Initially, I was going to choose a British indie magazine, however, I thought this was already done and there isn’t enough space in the market for that as there are already magazines such as NME and Q magazine. Therefore I went with the idea of contemporary northern soul as there are no existing magazine that focus on the movement of this era and I think it would be forward thinking and unique to do. There are many current northern soul bands and artists around such as newcomer Elliott Sumner (already with 1,700 listeners on Spotify)and The Who. These are two classic examples of artists that I will focus my magazine on. Although The Who have been making music since 1964, they recently made a comeback and are still performing in arenas with a massive 348,000 listeners on Spotify. This shows that the audience is huge and need somewhere to read up on the bands/artists in the genre. Magazines such as NME have predominately male readers therefore I have also decided to feature a little bit on fashion in my magazine and my target audience will be mainly female. I think that this will work as I am also in the target audience, and I enjoy the music and the fashion of northern soul myself so would enjoy making the magazine and would have lots of ideas.
